Edward Elgar Energy Centre

16th September 2025

Envirotech Building Services was appointed to deliver a full upgrade of the Edward Elgar Energy Centre, converting a redundant medium-temperature district heating system into a modern low-temperature energy centre.

The existing 30-year-old system, including five 1MW boilers, was replaced with high-efficiency Bosch GE900 boilers, thermal storage, CHP, and hot water generators. A new electrical switchroom was constructed, and all outgoing trenched pipework within service tunnels was replaced. New service trenches were also formed to futureproof connections, and a large chimney stack above the plantroom was safely demolished.

Working in a live courtyard with active kitchen deliveries and adjacent teaching spaces during summer school, the team managed significant constraints, including confined trench works with unknown structural conditions, a challenging double-crane lift for thermal stores, and an extremely tight plantroom footprint.

Off-site prefabrication using Revit, Code 1 welding with full NDT testing, and digital tracking via SnagR supported efficient delivery and a zero-incident, on-time completion.
