Envirotech Building Services was appointed as Main Contractor to deliver the Armstrong Siddeley Energy Centre upgrade during Coventry University’s summer break, ensuring minimal disruption to campus operations.
The project involved replacing three boilers, a chiller, and a CHP unit, with a total plantroom heating load of 2.5MW. The system was converted from open-vented to sealed, and new installations included a GRP-enclosed chilled water pump room, and a packaged booster set. Temporary heating and DHWS plant ensured all services remained live throughout the works.
Operating in a live university environment posed challenges, including the discovery of critical power cables serving the central comms room running through the boiler house. These were safely rerouted overnight with extensive contingency measures. Envirotech also worked closely with the university’s grounds team to protect surrounding landscaping.
Off-site prefabrication using Revit modelling, non-destructive weld testing with a 100% pass rate, and digital defect tracking helped deliver a zero-defect handover two weeks ahead of schedule.
