Graham Sutherland Energy Centre

16th September 2025

Envirotech delivered the Graham Sutherland Energy Centre upgrade over the university’s summer break, acting as Main Contractor for this complex plantroom replacement.

The project included the installation of four boilers, a chiller, and a CHP unit with a total heating load of 4.5MW. A new rooftop plant area was created for chillers and heat dumps, along with a packaged booster room and a new compressor room serving the building’s compressed air circuits. The system was converted from open-vented to sealed, and all DHWS services remained live throughout via temporary plant.

Working within a live university environment, challenges included coordinating works across a main student thoroughfare and managing extensive asbestos removal in the chimney structure. A key tenant required uninterrupted access throughout the project, including during crane lifts—managed through regular coordination meetings.

Off-site prefabrication using Revit and pre-assembled temporary headers allowed for fast, efficient installation and minimal disruption to university operations.
